A blog about first-time feature directing

3 weeks before the shoot, I realized it might be a good idea to start recording what’s going on. I should have started sooner, but here it is, for fellow first-time feature directors and other curious spirits: my experience. In short form, since, uh, I don’t really have the time to be blogging...

Also, somebody please take a decent portrait of me one of these days. It would be very useful. Thank you.

Coming soon to a theater near you...

Hello, Fiona blog readers!

Today is a historic day in U.S. and world history. Barack Obama was elected president of the United States last night, and the air is charged with hope and possibility. Hundreds of thousands of people who had never before voted finally saw enough of themselves, or their desire for change, reflected in a candidate to register and vote.

Many of us residing in California, however, are experiencing a lot of sadness/anger/frustration around the heartbreaking fact that

That’s a wrap.

Yep, it’s over. Week 3 was a blur. We had some very short days and some very slow days and I think overall people were both excited and sad for the shoot to be rolling to an end. I think Week 3 was the Week of Beer. Started off shooting at a bar in SF (Sadie’s Flying Elephant) - and thoroughly enjoying the libations after wrap. We also shot at the Production House, we had a day at the beach, and the big party scene at “the brothel” in SF (an actual party house - much gratitude to its

Week 2 Recap

Wow, I’ve been lagging on this thing. Got two voice messages from my mom saying she’d checked the blog for updates and was forced to call because there was nothing new... so, here goes. :)

We had another pretty smooth week. We shot in a dance studio for  the first 2 days. Got great extra turnout to fake a Saturday night scene on a Tuesday at 9am... Cristin (UPM & Extras Coordinator) rockks! The biggest obstacle we had was that an actor playing a small yet important role just didn’t show up to

Week 1 Recap

We completed the first week of filming! Wow! 1/3 of the way there!

I have to write quickly because my battery will run out and I left my charger at the Production House. I’m very happy with how things are going and feel that, overall, I’ve been in a good mood all week long. No major catastrophes or dramas... so far.

The last 3 days of shooting were pretty great. Friday (Day 4) was the first day with any problems. We were shooting the kitchen in the house, and as DP, Art Director and Director

3 down, 15 to go

Morning of Day 4. Update blog quickly before jumping into shower and heading to Production House.

Days 2 & 3 went great. We haven’t run into any big obstacles so far. Everyone in the crew and cast is extremely helpful and cooperative! 2 cast members, D Renee (“L”) and Elle Ho (“Tara”) are helping out behind the camera as well, which is wonderful. We had a late lunch on one of the days and no one got crabby; people remain super happy and thankful for the excellent meals.

The extras are also
